If you’re visiting us this spring, you’re in for a treat. Just a stone’s throw from Lancaster Cottage lies one of the Peak District’s best-kept secrets: Clough Wood, near Winster. At this time of year, the woodland floor becomes a sea of blue as the bluebells burst into bloom.
It’s not just the bluebells that make this place magical. As you walk beneath the canopy, the only sound you’ll hear is birdsong. The bright green of newly unfurling ferns catches the light, and the scent of spring is in the air. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it feels like something from a fairytale.
Even better? It’s quiet. Undiscovered. We walked this route yesterday and saw only one other person the whole way round.
Here’s a 5.25km circular route you can follow straight from the cottage:

Time: 1hr 30 mins approx
Distance: 5.25km
Elevation gain: 198m
You’ll pass through Clough Wood itself (where the bluebells are most dense), loop round by Greatclose Wood, and return via lovely quiet lanes. The views across the valley are a bonus.

We’d love to keep this walk our little secret – but it’s far too beautiful not to share. If you’re staying with us this May, don’t miss it!
